Profile
The primary intention of Vernon H. Buck VFW Post 7957 has two parts.
1.Support of Veterans and Veterans programs.
2.Service to the community of Emporia and Lyon County.
Some of our projects are:
- Financial support to charitable organizations including VFW National Home for Children, Disabled American Veterans, USO, Special Olympics, and Boys’ Town.
- Management of VFW "Voice of Democracy" and "Patriots Pen" student essay contests, including cash awards.
- Gift of Thanksgiving/Christmas Dinner for Veterans’ families.
- Distribute “Buddy Poppies” at All Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day.
- Non-perishable food collection and delivery to Salvation Army and Blessing Boxes.
Our biggest project is the Lyon County Memorial Day Flag Display. Every Memorial Day, volunteers throughout Lyon County place miniature American Flags at the gravesites of Veterans. Vernon H. Buck VFW Post 7957 has accepted the honor of providing the flags to cemetery caretakers throughout Lyon County in addition to personally placing the flags at Maplewood Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Emporia. The Memorial Day Flag Display has been ongoing for 25 years through the support and volunteering of our citizens. Over the years, greater participation has increased the count of flags needed to nearly 3000 per year. It is our intention that no Veteran shall be forgotten on this day of honor.
We invite all Lyon County residents to join us in this effort. Please consider contributing to us on Emporia Community Foundation Match Day on November 13.
