Specific Need

Your contribution to Pioneer Bluffs supports this place where visitors step into the past, community gathers to celebrate, and a way of life is honored.  We are preserving Flint Hills ranching heritage with unique educational programs, including:

• A Day on the Prairie, when children splash in Crocker Creek, roll down a hill, skip rocks – all while learning about the prairie, ranching, history, the Flint Hills, and nature.
• The Prairie Talk series of discussions on ranching and the Flint Hills.
• Restoration of this historic site - maintaining history for the future.
• Community events of music, history, and art, which bring diverse cultural opportunities to the Flint Hills – offered free or low cost.
• A free self-guided tour, allowing visitors to explore history, background stories, and a bit of education about this and other ranches, and the generations of ranchers who shaped the Flint Hills.
• Development of a nature trail for everyone to enjoy the beauty along Crocker Creek.

Specifically in the coming year, we plan to focus on maintenance and improvements needed for our nature trail.

Our nature trail was built in 2020, filling a community need to be outdoors and enjoy nature during the pandemic. That need hasn’t changed. Nearly every day, visitors stop to stroll through our National Register Historic District and enjoy our (free) nature trail and self-guided tour. They connect with nature and history, while learning about ranching in the Flint Hills. Improvements to our trail will enhance our visitors’ experience.

Last year’s Match Day allowed us to repaint and repair our iconic barn, in addition to providing more educational and cultural community programs.

Mission

The Flint Hills Ranching Heritage Center at Pioneer Bluffs is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the ranching heritage of the Flint Hills.

Profile

Our story began in 1859 when Charles Rogler, a young Austrian immigrant, walked from Iowa to build a new life in Kansas.  Charles’ son, Henry, and later a grandson, Wayne, took the reins, making the Pioneer Bluffs farm/ranch operation one of the most well-respected in the region.

Today Pioneer Bluffs is a nonprofit organization, the Center of Flint Hills Ranching Heritage. We are the only organization dedicated exclusively to this distinctive mission.

Visit this National Register Historic District to explore our classic 1908 farm house, restored 1915 barn, 1916 granary, 1859 log cabin replica, mile-long limestone fence, beautiful gardens, and nature trail.
