Goal: $15,000.00
Specific Need
“The Bank” is a Matfield Green Works project and the last remaining commercial building in Matfield Green. After sitting vacant for more than 50 years, the small building was rehabilitated as a space for art, information, and community by Matfield Green Works in 2013. The Bank hosted art exhibitions and demonstrations, musical performances, presentations, and community events and collaborated with the Kansas Tallgrass Artists Residency. Matfield Green Works purchased the building in February 2019 and began preliminary work and fundraising, but the project stalled when the world shut down the following year. During that time, a leak caused the roof and floors to deteriorate rapidly, making the building unsafe to occupy.
The time has now come to breathe life back into this much loved local landmark so it can be filled with people, light, music, and color again. Long term plans involve adding modern fancy conveniences like water and plumbing, but the immediate need is to address the structural issues. We need your help, and every bit helps. The mission of Matfield Green Works is to connect people to the earth and each other and once finished “The Bank” can once more proudly open its doors to welcome guests and visitors.
Mission
Connecting people to the earth and each other.Profile
Matfield Green, a Flint Hills ranching community of about 50, attracts visitors worldwide; artists, writers, train enthusiasts, historians, gravel cyclists, bird watchers, and those wanting to experience the stunning tallgrass prairie. This tiny community draws creative people and adventurers to it like a magnet, bringing significant cultural and economic impact to the region. From this rich soil, the non-profit Matfield Green Works organization was born.
Since 2013, Matfield Green Works has connected people to the earth and one another through arts, education, and community events. In 2023, it shifted from programs and events to larger scale restoration projects to preserve the Flint Hills for future generations. These efforts depend on generous professionals, volunteers, donors, and partners. We invite you to join them as a friend and supporter!
