Specific Need
In order to fulfill our mission of providing opportunities for all children in Lyon County and the surrounding communities, Camp Alexander works throughout the year to raise funds that help make camp accessible to every child. Through generous donations, we are able to provide full and partial scholarships to families who need assistance, while also working hard to keep camp affordable for all families.
We are continually investing in and improving our facilities to ensure Camp Alexander remains a safe, welcoming, and top-notch place for children to learn, grow, and create lasting memories. Of course, maintaining and improving our camp takes both time and financial resources.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community and for everyone who has generously given to Camp Alexander, whether through financial contributions, volunteer hours, or other acts of kindness and service. Your generosity makes it possible for us to continue providing these opportunities to the children in our community, and we truly could not do it without you!
Thank you for believing in Camp Alexander and helping us make a difference in the lives of the children and families we serve.
Mission
Camp Alexander's mission is to empower children by providing a safe place for growth and enrichment in the great outdoors while fostering a respect for the environment.
Profile
Camp Alexander was established in the 1930s after the efforts of James Putnam, a local attorney, who discovered the will from EJ Alexander, a former black slave. Upon Alexander's death in 1923, his will stated that the 39 acres and $1,190.00 he had be given to the children of Emporia.
Camp Alexander is a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for children from all cultures and socio-economic levels and helps them create friendships while experiencing the great outdoors. Our weekly summer day camp is open for children ages 6 to 12 to attend as campers and ages 13-14 are invited to apply to our Leader-In-Training program. We offer camper scholarships to help cover the expenses for those that otherwise would not be able to experience what Camp Alexander has to offer.
Today, Camp Alexander provides a safe haven for the youth of Emporia where they can explore their creative side and meet new friends. Camp Alexander carefully plans weekly summer camps for kids to enjoy and burn off energy and at the same time learn team work, leadership skills, and about nature. The kids are encouraged to interact with one another and share their ideas to create bonds that will hopefully last a lifetime. In our camps, parents can feel comfortable that their child is getting the best out of summer. Camp Alexander offers a variety of summer camps from water balloon fights to team sports and boat-building. Our directors and counselors come from different educational backgrounds that combined together create an unforgettable summer experience.
Camp Alexander is also invested in the health of our community and children. Apart from the our summer day camp that keeps children moving and exploring the outdoors, Camp Alexander has several different trails that are open to the community to use year round.
As a non-profit, Camp Alexander relies on donations from the community and could not exist without the community's support. We want to share our amazing program with as many children as possible. The involvement of our community is crucial to keep the camp running and welcoming new children every year. Camp Alexander truly appreciates our community and those who have donated their time and money to help support our cause.
