Specific Need
Last year, with the help of Match Day donations, Matfield Green Works was able to complete the first of two important projects in Matfield Green. The first project was “The Green,” a multi-use mini park. Where there was once an abandoned lot, there is now a handicapped accessible restroom, off-street parking, potable water, bike repair and washing station, and sheltered picnic area. Volunteers will soon be finishing The Green with native prairie landscaping, signage and public art.
Energized by this successful project, Matfield Green Works is beginning restoration work on “The Bank.” Located at the nexus of the two main streets in Matfield Green - the Flint Hills Scenic Byway and Bocook Street -The Bank is the last remaining storefront in town and a revered landmark for Matfield residents and Byway travelers. Built in 1903 and closed in 1931, The Bank began a new life as visitors space and gallery in 2013, and until structural challenges closed the building in 2019, was visited by more than 750 visitors annually. The immediate need is:
- To stabilize the building with a new roof;
- Shore up the foundation so floor repairs can begin.
The goal is to save this historic space so it can once again flourish as a Flint Hills welcome, community, art, and education center.
Mission
Connecting people to the earth and each other.Profile
Matfield Green (population 50 more or less) has captured the imaginations of visitors from all over the world. Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, this ranching community was founded on balancing environment and economics, and attracts those seeking to escape urban life, if even for a day. The stunning prairie scenery draws creative people and adventurers to it like a magnet, bringing significant cultural and economic impact to the region. From this rich soil, the non-profit Matfield Green Works organization was born.
Since 2013, Matfield Green Works has promoted "connecting people to the earth and each other" through a series of art exhibitions, performances, educational programs, and community gatherings. Building on this, Matfield Green Works began work in 2023 on community restoration projects. While these transformative projects require larger financial support, they promise to ensure future generations are able to engage with the timeless beauty of the Flint Hills. This magical community is truly fortunate to have the help of generous committed professionals, volunteers, donors, and partners who live all over the US and beyond but have a special place in their heart for Matfield Green. We welcome you to become a friend and supporter too!
