  • To obtain funding which will be used to help with purchase of items and postage for shipping

Mission

Military Care Packages wants to make sure that our deployed Kansas military men and women serving overseas are remembered during Christmas time and feel closer to home.

Profile

The Fraternal Order of Eagles #2587, sent the first shipment of care packages in 2003.  In 2004, Ralph Tebbetts organized the first fund drive which is now in its 14th year.  After Ralph moved in 2011, Diane Tebbetts took over and promised to do whatever necessary to "keep it alive".

The fund drive begins in October with the printing of flyers which are placed throughout the city.  On the last Tuesday in October, drop-off boxes are placed in eight different locations in Emporia, KS.  Donation of items can include such things as stationary, toiletries, crackers, candy, etc.  Items that CANNOT be sent are chocolate, aerosol cans, and large canned goods (sardines and vienna sausages are acceptable).

Meanwhile, visits are made to local businesses for financial donations to help with any additional purchases and help defray the cost of shipping.

The drop-off boxes are picked up on the last Tuesday in November.  The boxes are then taken to the VFW for the items to be sorted.  Based on donations, Diane may need to go to Sam's Club, which adds more expenses do to mileage, gas, and tolls, to buy additional items.  Last year, almost $900 was used to purchase additional "goodies" to be added to what had already been collected by the community.

On the first Saturday of December, a Packing Party is held where volunteers fill large, flat-rate boxes which are then set aside; ready for the next step in the process.  The following Tuesday, the boxes and custom's forms are numbered, address labels are placed, and then taken to the post office for shipping.

Since December 2010, Military Care Packages has shipped over 550 boxes overseas for our troops.  Military Care Packages runs solely on the support of volunteers and donations from the community.  Diane Tebbetts runs the whole operation from home and believes in its strong meaning to U.S. troops overseas.  With your help, we can make the upcoming Match Day our best fundraiser yet.
