Emporia Area Match Day

Friends of the Emporia Public Library

Specific Need

The Friends of the Emporia Public Library is devoting our 2018 Match Day funds for the future renovation and/or expansion of the Emporia Public Library, with special consideration given to the children’s area.

Though early in the planning process, a study of the children’s area by The Clark Enersen Partners architecture firm showed that the children’s area is BEYOND capacity.  The shelves are full and there is no room for growth.

Accomplishing this goal will take time, persistence, patience, and money.  We appreciate your generosity as the library begins looking to the future.

Mission

The mission of the Friends of the Emporia Public Library is to provide support for the library's programs, help the library achieve its mission, and to be an advocate within the community in support of the library.

Profile

The Friends of the Library (FOL) are people who believe in the worth of an effective and attractive library.  Its members pay a small membership fee and many serve in a volunteer capacity on the Friends Board, in committees, and in various roles for our two annual book sales.  Because of the efforts of these people our library benefits in many ways.

The Friends raise money through used book sales, donations, and FOL membership dues.  They give thousands of dollars to the library for noteworthy programs and volunteer to assist with library programs for area seniors, adults, teens, and children throughout the year.  We are especially proud of supporting the library with funds for:

  • Summer Reading Programs for All Ages
  • Summer Kids’ Koncerts Series
  • Library Newsletter
  • Starling Word Counters
  • Promotional Items & Refreshments for Library Programs
  • The Annual Volunteer Luncheon for All Friends & Library Volunteers
  • BookPage Book Review Publication
  • Multiple Copy Book Discussions Sets
  • Staff Development Activities
  • Large Screen TV for the Children's Storytime Room
  • Accu-cut Dies for Bulletin Boards
  • Patron Book Baskets

And many other free events that bring the community together at the library several times a year.

FOL advocate for literacy and education through the library’s free programs and materials.  The Friends are privileged to spend time volunteering during the events as well as provide some or all of the activities’ funding.  While focusing on the library’s initiatives, Friends’ members gain insights into the challenges of what it takes to keep the library free and open to all.  Our pursuit of funding for the library renovation/expansion will be ongoing to meet the future needs of the community.
