Emporia Municipal Band

Goal: $5,000.00

Specific Need

Emporia Municipal Band is composed of over 40 musicians who practice weekly in the summer to give our regular Thursday evening performances.  Part of our Match Day donations will be used to pay the musicians for weekly rehearsals and concerts.  The other part of the donations will be used for the update and upkeep of the instruments belonging to the band as well as music additions to our library and covering the expenses of the Granada theater for our annual Christmas concert.

Mission

The Emporia Municipal Band serves the citizens of Emporia and surrounding areas by providing a free, family-friendly band concert in the summer and for Veteran's Day and the holiday season.

Profile

The Emporia City Band was originally established in 1880 by local military groups and local teachers.  After the deployment in the 1940s, the band came to a pause.  In 1941, Emporia Municipal Band was re-established and re-named by locals.  Since then, the Emporia Municipal Band has offered free-of-charge and family friendly concerts year-round and aim to maintain that tradition.

The EMB consists of 40-50 musicians who practice weekly in the summer to present concerts of marches, traditional and contemporary popular music, patriotic melodies, sing alongs, and show tunes to the crowd.  Their season kicks off at the end of May with the Memorial Day Concert and goes on until mid-July, offering Emporians 7 to 8 concerts, free of charge, throughout the summer to enjoy at Fremont Park.  We conclude our yearly season by playing a Christmas concert at the Emporia Granada theater in December.

Many of our musicians rent or own their own instruments, but the band owns several pieces of percussion equipment that must be maintained. The band also covers the costs of renting the Granada Theater in December. While we do receive funding from the city, our current concert schedule (and ability to provide concerts free of charge) would not be possible with the support of our generous community. From the Emporia Municipal Band, you receive our most sincere "thank you" for your donation today.
